When the pastry chefs at a landmark Los Angeles dining establishment couldn’t find bread good enough for their restaurants, they spent a year crafting the perfect recipe. They created a bread with a caramelized, golden crust, soft interior and rustic appearance.
Their signature recipe resulted in such delicious artisan bread that they opened La Brea Bakery on La Brea Ave. When there were people lined up outside the bakery every morning and the bread sold out by 11 AM, they knew they had a hit.
Today, we use the original sourdough recipe and the same artisan techniques in our La Brea Bakery artisan breads found in local grocery stores.

What Sets Us Apart

Signature Sourdough Starter

We developed our original Sourdough Starter in 1989 using only flour, water, salt and wild yeast from the skin of organic grapes. This ultimately became the signature ingredient in every single loaf of La Brea Bakery breads, giving a depth of flavor, texture and other artisan characteristics.

All La Brea Bakery breads are crafted using high-quality ingredients. We have made it a commitment to use locally milled flour, as well as making sure our products are free of preservatives and additives. Additionally, most of our breads are Non-GMO, kosher, and Vegan Certified, so even more customers can have peace of mind when they enjoy them.

Patient Process

Our breads are made using complex flavor profiles and techniques as a result of time-honored traditions. Two hallmarks of artisan bread are present in every loaf, roll, round, baguette, batard and slice — the flavor is concentrated in the crust and the open structure has a chewy texture.

Crafted using our starter, each of our loaves follows the artisan tradition of slow proofing, low stress lines, and hearth baked ovens resulting in crispy, crunchy crust and soft interior.

Rolls

Our range of rolls is made with true artisan techniques to create the thin crisy crust and strong, open structure that stand up to ingredients.We have traditional French dinner rolls, a variety of rolls in different shapes and sizes, and rolls with flavorful seeds and herbs to meet all your needs.

Rounds

Hearty rounds are made using the same artisan techniques as our loaves. Ideal for grilled sandwiches, toast, or anything customers can dream up, rounds are perfect when something more substantial is desired.
